Nothing like a crisp cool fall morning to remind me that I'm alive. I've been enjoying such mornings all week.
Monday it was an easy aerobic swim in the outdoor pool. Air was crisp. If I paused at the wall too long, goose bumps popped up on my arms. Made sure I had the swim cap on to keep the heat in.
Tuesday was an hour bike ride followed by a 4 mile run. Didn't need the T-shirt on the run but wore it anyway, for Fall's sake. Even when I got into the pool at 11:30 am, the air was still crisp enough to require my swim cap.
Wednesday morning was a 5 mile run. Darkness still blanketed the sky when I left my house and the sun was just peeking over the horizon when I finished. I love those workouts.
Today's forcast was about 40 degrees for the overnight low, so when I crawled out of bed at 4:30 am I pulled on my long tights and jacket over my base layer for my bike ride. With this being the first really cool morning, no one else showed up for the group ride except the lead, so he and I rode 24 miles before work. I didn't bike last winter due to my marathon training, so I had forgotten the cardinal rule of fall cycling. If you're comfortable at the start, take off some layers. By 2 miles in I was sweating and ready to peel the layers off. Unfortunately there was no stopping, and I had no where for the layers to go anyway, so I just had to unzip. Unzip the vest. Unzip the jacket. Take off the gloves. It's all good.
Tomorrow morning, I'm heading to the pool about 5:30 am for a 90 minute swim. It's all long anaerobic intervals so I don't think I'll have a chance to get cold. But the best part of cool, crisp fall morning workouts, is the nice hot shower and steamy cup of coffee that awaits me when I finish. Mmmmmm....
